Spencer’s practice focuses on transactional health law matters, specifically in areas such as contract review and drafting, HIPAA and confidentiality, fraud and abuse, and compliance with Federal and state laws and regulations. He also provides advice and guidance on corporate business development and assists clients in analyzing and implementing internal policies and procedures, including those related to employment discrimination and accommodation matters. Additionally, Spencer represents licensed healthcare practitioners in defense against licensing and administrative investigations with the State of Michigan. He engages in helping individual physicians and health practitioners with employment agreements and independent contract evaluation, education, and negotiation.
Prior to joining Smith Haughey, Spencer worked in-house as an associate corporate counsel at a health insurance subrogation company specializing in pursuing reimbursement of liens for employer-funded health insurance plans across the country.
Spencer graduated from Kansas State University with a B.S., cum laude, in biology. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from Loyola University Chicago. During his time at Loyola, Spencer was the executive editor of publications for the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal, an academic tutor for multiple semesters for first year torts and contracts classes, and was a Health Law Fellow for the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy. He has published various articles in legal journals covering topics such as indirect patent infringement and medical licensing for military medical personnel.
When he is not in the office, Spencer enjoys cooking, baking, bouldering, skateboarding, running, and exploring new neighborhoods and areas of the city and surrounding area.
