Associate Attorney – Litigator (Grand Rapids)

Smith Haughey is seeking a senior Associate Attorney to join the team in our Grand Rapids, MI office. The ideal candidate has 3 to 5 years of meaningful litigation experience—i.e., helping to formulate and implement litigation strategy, taking and defending depositions, and drafting and arguing substantive motions. Familiarity with appellate practice a plus.

Associate Attorney – Medical Malpractice (Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids)

Smith Haughey is seeking two senior Associate Attorneys to join our teams in the Grand Rapids office and the Ann Arbor office. The ideal candidate should have 3 to 7 years of meaningful medical malpractice experience—i.e., helping to formulate and implement litigation strategy, taking and defending depositions, and drafting and arguing substantive motions.

Legal Administrative Assistant (Grand Rapids)
We are seeking a full-time Legal Administrative Assistant to join the team in the Grand Rapids, MI office.

The Legal Administrative Assistant will play a crucial role supporting a complex and diverse Health Law Practice and Medical Malpractice Litigation Practice. They will act as a “practice coordinator” keeping all aspects of the attorneys’ practices running. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, exude a high degree of professionalism, and be the ultimate team player.  

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overall collection and organization of documents and information for attorneys’ cases; handling a wide variety of complex and confidential time-sensitive material; maintaining accurate filing systems and dockets
  • Management of attorneys’ calendars and overall schedules; keeping them apprised of court imposed or other deadlines and upcoming meetings
  • Acting as a liaison between shareholders, associate attorneys, expert witnesses, and clients
  • Assisting shareholders with tracking billable time
  • Filing legal documents with proper courts
  • Preparing and assembling materials, documents, and exhibits for meetings, court appearances, and hearings
  • Composing routine letters and drafting documents
  • Proofreading and correcting prepared materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, format, and content
  • Receiving and screening visitors and telephone calls; responding to inquiries on a variety of matters such as status of pending cases
  • Acting as back-up to other Legal Administrative Assistants
  • Performing other duties as requested or assigned

Desired Qualifications & Characteristics

  • A bachelor’s degree in legal studies or another related field
  • Two or more years of experience as a Legal Administrative Assistant
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) and document management software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to anticipate needs and discover new efficiencies
  • Nimble-minded with ability to work in a fluid team environment
  • Strong work ethic
