The blatant disregard for human life and senseless violence our nation witnessed with the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery has outraged and saddened all of us. While the most recent cases are dominating the headlines, we are reminded that these atrocities have been happening for far too long in this nation, and the world. Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge stands firmly against all forms of racism and violence. We will not and cannot condone any action by any person or entity that degrades or eliminates anyone’s dignity or access to equal justice. These are Constitutional and inalienable rights for all, regardless of race.
As members of the legal community, we bear the responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard and pride ourselves in zealously advocating for the application of the law in a consistent, fair, and just manner. We must all make concerted and direct efforts to eliminate bias and enhance diversity and inclusion in our community, state and country. We must educate ourselves, listen to others, and advocate for those whose voices simply are not heard. We must all do better.
Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge pledges to listen and learn from these unthinkable situations. We will empower our Diversity & Inclusion Committee to ensure that we remain focused on equity, justice, and dignity. We will also reach out to our legal partners within our community to utilize our unique position to change the narrative that has defined our nation for centuries. We will collaborate to create more opportunities for access to justice. We will continue our work to provide individuals of all backgrounds with equal opportunity, and to ensure that law enforcement serves to protect every member of our community.
We ask that other legal community members step forward and make the pledge to be a part of the change that needs to occur.
Now is the time.
