Brooke A. Johnston

Brooke is an associate in Smith Haughey’s Grand Rapids office, practicing in the firm’s medical malpractice defense practice group. Brooke represents hospitals, nurses and other healthcare providers throughout the state.

Prior to joining Smith Haughey, Brooke practiced as a litigation attorney in the Detroit and Dearborn legal markets, working in both the private and public interest sector. While litigating in the private sector, Brooke represented insurance companies in instances of fraud and coverage priority disputes. While litigating in the public interest sector, Brooke worked on a COVID-19 litigation team that sought to mitigate pandemic-related homelessness. As a public interest attorney, Brooke successfully secured via negotiation or litigation the continued housing stability of over 100 Michigan households. As a professional, Brooke zealously advocates for her clients by understanding the legal and human implications of the conflict.

Brooke is passionate about promoting educational opportunities for low-income communities and first-generation college students. In her spare time, Brooke is often happily “lost” exploring the Manistee National Forest or kayaking the lakes that surround Grand Rapids. She is a supporter of the performing arts and attends as many community and professional theater productions as she can.
