A. Tony Taweel has been inducted as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Taweel joins Smith Haughey attorneys Cheryl Chandler, William Jack, Jr., E. Thomas McCarthy, Jr., and John O’Loughlin as an ABOTA member.
“Tony is the consummate trial lawyer who continues the legacy of this law firm in Michigan courtrooms,” said CEO Matt Wikander. “We are thrilled ABOTA has recognized Tony for what we have known all along.”
ABOTA is a national organization comprised of more than 7,300 trial lawyers and judges dedicated to preserving the right to trial by jury and elevating the standards of integrity, honor, and courtesy within the legal profession. Membership is by invitation only and is equally balanced between plaintiff and defense counsel.
Lawyers must have at least five years of active experience as a trial lawyer and tried at least 10 civil jury trials to verdict. In addition to active state bar membership and exemplary trial experience, members must exhibit the virtues of civility, integrity, and professionalism in practice.
“I am incredibly honored to become a member of ABOTA,” said Taweel. “I look forward to working with its members in promoting improvement in the ethical and technical standards of trial practice.”
Taweel is a member of Smith Haughey’s medical malpractice defense group. He has defended health care institutions and professionals against malpractice claims for over 25 years and regularly represents health systems, individual physicians, and health care providers. Taweel is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. He is an active member of the Michigan Society of Healthcare Risk Management, Michigan Defense Trial Counsel, and the State Bar of Michigan’s Character and Fitness Committee.
