Summer Associates Join Smith Haughey

Grand Rapids, Mich., June 1, 2010 – Smith Haughey is pleased to announce that the following three law school students have joined the firm’s Grand Rapids office as Summer Associates. While at Smith Haughey, Charissa C. Huang, Brian D. Shekell, and Michael D. Shelton will have an opportunity to work on projects for multiple attorneys and practice areas and will also have opportunities to attend and observe hearings, lay and expert depositions, mediations, client meetings, and trials.

About the Summer Associates
Charissa Huang is pursuing a Juris Doctor at Northwestern University School of Law with an expected graduation date of May 2011. During law school, she has served as Vice President of the Labor, Employment & Immigration Law Society; Heritage Month Chair of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association; Secretary of the Arts & Entertainment Law Society; and Senior Articles Editor for the Journal of Law and Social Policy. Charissa previously attended the University of Michigan where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Arts in English. Her previous professional experience includes serving as the Senior Immigration Assistant in the Employment Department at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP in Atlanta, Georgia, and as a Judicial Intern for the Honorable Robert H. Cleland in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Brian Shekell is pursing a Juris Doctor at Wayne State University College of Law with an expected graduation date of May 2011. He serves as president of both the Wayne State Law Moot Court Team and the Federalist Society. He has also participated in the Jessup Moot Court Competition Team. Brian previously attended Michigan State University, James Madison College of Public Affairs where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with a specialization in Political Economics. His previous professional experience includes serving as an intern in the Office of Chief Judge Pro Tem Christopher M. Murray of the Michigan Court of Appeals, Director of Communications for the Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber of Commerce, Logistics Director/Political Coordinator for the Michigan Republican Party, and Political-Military Staff Intern for the United States Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Michael Shelton is pursing a Juris Doctor at Wayne State University College of Law with an expected graduation date of May 2011. He is a member of the College’s Moot Court, recipient of the Dean’s Scholar Award, and completed a study aboard program at Bar Ilan University in Israel. Michael previously attended Oakland University where he earned a B.S., magna cum laude, in Human Resource Development. His previous professional experience includes serving as a Student Attorney at the Free Legal Aid Clinic in Detroit and as a Treatment Specialist for Crossroads For Youth in Oxford, Michigan. Michael also previously served in the U.S. Army as both a Parachute Infantryman and a Crew Chief on UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopters, and in the Michigan Army National Guard as a UH-60 Blackhawk Helicopter Repairer. He has received numerous awards and medals for his service in the Army.
